About Ambrosia Ball 2013
Our annual Ambrosia Ball will celebrate the National Hellenic Museum’s 30th year anniversary, featuring dinner, dancing, silent auction and raffle in the elegant Palmer House Grand Ballroom in the heart of Downtown Chicago.
Event entertainment includes live performances by Public i, DJ John Grammatis, and Orpheus Dance Troupe. Guests will experience an exhilarating evening immersed in the ambience and vibrant traditions of APOKRIES!
About Apokries (uh-pok-ree-us)
Apokries, the Greek carnival season, literally meaning, “abstaining from meat,” is a three week period just before Lent, associated with revelry, mischief and satire.
Believed to be rooted in the ancient Greek festival tradition, especially in honor of the god Dionysus, one might say that Apokries is a period of purging one’s inhibitions in preparation for the Lenten fast.
Through clever and creative disguises, revellers satirize the establishment, make social commentary, play pranks on innocent bystanders, or simply swagger in festive dress. Festivities throughout Greece are varied and focus on re-enactment of traditional customs, dances and folklore.
