“The Past & Future of the Hagia Sophia” Lecture

July 15, 2020 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Join us on our Youtube page on Wednesday July 15th when our Resident Scholar, Dr. Katherine Kelaidis, will discuss the past and future of the Hagia Sophia.

Originally the great cathedral of the Christian East, construction on the Hagia Sophia began in 517. It has, over the centuries, both both a Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic cathedral as well as a mosque. Since 1935, the building had served as a museum; however, a recent ruling by a Turkish court has paved the way for the Hagia Sophia to be reconverted into a mosque. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced that it would be reopened to Muslim worship the same day. In this talk, we will cover the history of the Hagia Sophia, the political consequences of its future, and what it means for the Hellenic legacy in Asia Minor.
